Stronger Every Day

You don’t need me to tell you that getting fit or staying fit is hard.  Or that fitness gets lower priority for many parents, especially those commuting to an office job.  A study posted by the National Institutes of Health documents how working parents often admit their fitness is lacking.  I’ve had many a day since becoming a mom when I put my children’s and spouse’s needs before my own.  A lack of support and encouragement by a spouse can also become a barrier.

Anyone else remember how long the road was from childbearing to feeling stronger and more comfortable again in your own skin?  After each of my caesarians, there was a point when it became a simple joy to just be able to walk and run again.  Then, I finally discovered how helpful weights could be.  Starting small, I learned to do minimal exercises to start rebuilding muscle in a gym setting.  I loved the ease of moving in the pool, using buoyant weights during water aerobics classes.  I also became enthralled with Body Pump classes that at first seemed like the most intimidating sessions imaginable.  I grew to love the feeling of pushing myself and getting just a little stronger each day.

I appreciate that National Fitness Center provides ways for my family to grow fit together.  When time management is a real struggle, it offers free childcare so busy parents can get time to work out in a gym setting.  It meets the need for children’s fitness through the Kids in Motion program, which lets kids get moving while parents fit in a workout session.  I am thrilled to say my kids have been growing up with NFC while I’ve been growing stronger physically and emotionally the past few years.  I wouldn’t wish single parenting on anyone, but I’ve been blessed to have NFC by my side as I’ve managed this new chapter of life.

Because we’re all on the path toward eventually becoming seniors, continuing physical activity can only help along the way.  The NIH encourages all seniors to focus on endurance, strength, balance and flexibility. NFC offers the settings for a variety of senior-friendly fitness ideas and even one-on-one customized training to meet special needs. I hope this family-oriented and community-oriented fitness center can be a part of our lives for years to come.
