Safe swimming is one of the most popular sports around.  The Centers for Disease Control reports swimming is the nation’s fourth most popular sport. It can span all age ranges.  You can exercise more effortlessly in the water without stress on muscles and joints that could occur on land.  Yet, safety is always a top concern.  National Fitness Center offers outdoor summer pools, plus year-around indoor pools for swimming.

Here are a few reminders about pool safety:

Parents must always supervise children.

Be extra aware if you swim at a pool that does not have a lifeguard.

Never dive into a pool not made for diving (most are not these days).

Read individual pool signs about age ranges, pool depth and more.

Use appropriate swim diapers for younger children.

Reapply sunscreen at least every hour.

Start early with swim classes and swim teams that build safe skills and confidence.

Use flotation devices for young children or anyone who is not a seasoned swimmer.
