Summertime Work and Play for Families

How does your family enjoy playing together in the summer?  What would your kids do for fun if they weren’t on the couch or on their phones?  Seems like all of our families struggle sometimes to keep our kids active enough. This can especially be the case on hot summer days when the air conditioning feels so comfortable indoors.

The consequences of not staying active while focusing on nutrition can be startlingly dangerous. The Journal Pediatrics reports more and more obesity in our children, starting as young as toddler and preschool ages. The Centers for Disease Control explains how children need an hour or more of physical activity each day.

One program that has motivated my kids to keep moving in the summer is Knoxville Youth Athletics.  It offers a month full of practice times on various high school tracks around the area, plus Saturday track meets.  Young athletes can learn various track and field skills then try to earn ribbons for placing.  The kids can go on to even more competitive versions of track competition.

Another motivator for them has been the Kids in Motion program at National Fitness Center.  On various days, they can do everything from basketball drills to cheerleading to karate, all in the cool of air conditioning.

Then, there is the classic cool-down of the summer pool.  They look forward each summer to Knox Beach opening off Alcoa Highway, with its expansive play area, diving board and extra-long swim lanes.  What better way to stay cool and fit, especially after a track meet?  As long as the drinking water and sunscreen is abundant, our family is ready for more summer fun!
