Growing up on reservations was not an easy childhood for Native American Shamir Peshewa.  She says obtaining her GED was not easy at age 27, after early years without much formal schooling.  Yet, she went on to obtain a college degree.  She has also spent much of her adulthood in personal training, helping others get in the best shape of their lives.  On January 6, 2018, she will compete in the first professional fight of her mixed martial arts career.

Peshewa says fighting for her is a way of helping her body and brain naturally overcome depression.  She also views it as a way to empower others to overcome whatever challenges them in their lives. She encourages everyone to consult their doctor about starting or improving a fitness routine, to keep moving for good physical and mental health. You can see her complete story on Peshewa here at Local 8 Now.com.

Peshewa is a National Fitness Center ambassador, encouraging people of every fitness level to get moving as part of an overall wellness program.  She has also worked as a fitness model.  She trains via her own business called Marvel My Fitness. Among those she has trained is mother-of-two Olivia Parker (pictured on right), who is fighting as an amateur.  Jessica Worth (pictured on left) says Peshewa also inspired her to become a personal trainer.

The upcoming professional fight will be part of a Valor Fights event in Knoxville on January 6.
