Moving Every Body for Fitness

The weight of a hard day shows on dozens of faces.  They hurriedly get changed into workout attire and line up outside the classroom.

All ages, shapes, skin colors and sizes of people from all walks of life pour into the well-lit space with its smooth wooden floor.  They gather their equipment and check the time.  Just a couple of minutes to spare.

“Hi, everybody!” exclaims the instructor in front of the mirrored wall.  The music starts pulsating into every corner of the room.

From warmup to intense cardio intervals, to cooldown, everyone focuses on the movements at hand.  Some have been here many times before and move with ease and intensity.  Others are just learning and pause occasionally to catch their breath.  The instructor offers alternatives.

The grandmother finds her rhythm, just as does the retired military sergeant and the college student.  The member who’s already lost 50 pounds moves effortlessly to the music.  The woman just beginning her weight loss journey laughs with joy as she learns some movements and missed others, just happy to be here.

Group fitness is a judgment-free hour in a zone where everyone feels welcome and free to express themselves.

They finish with stretching, sweating and promises to see one another next week. One member asks about another’s ill loved one.  A mom brags how well her son is doing in school.  These bodies that gathered, so different from one another in appearance, belong to unique personalities and sweet souls.  Each one departs feeling just a little boost of the spirit as they go back to their busy week.
