Artist Jeremy Haun Creates Dino Day for Family Time

Too busy to spend time with your kids? Working extra hours on deadline for an important project? Many of us can relate. Artist Jeremy Haun and his wife Lori, an interior designer, were concerned about spending enough quality time with their two young sons amid busy work weeks. His wife’s schedule offers a bit more flexibility, while Haun often finds himself spending long hours in his studio to meet deadlines. From this common parenting dilemma was born the Dino Day project.

“A great thing about having kids is you get to experience the things you loved as a child,” shared Haun, “so we decided to make dinosaur drawing a regular thing. Out of that came Dino Day.”

At least one day a week, this independent, sought-after comic book artist sets aside the latest projects he’s working on for Marvel or other high profile clients. He turns his attention to a sketching or inking session with his sons. 9-year-old Ethan and 5-year-old Owen get free reign to tell their famous dad what he should draw.  It’s a Bracheiosaurus this week, a Spinosaurus another time, and of course, a ferocious T-Rex!

Ethan has even created pencil drawings that his dad inked for him – with both sets of artist initials on the page. Younger Owen enjoys coloring on printouts of the dino drawings.

Lori Haun proudly shared that both boys want to emulate their father, and that he’s making this time for them. “They both say they want to be artists when they grow up. It’s fun for them to get to interact with what Jeremy does. He works long hours.”

Haun has been posting his family’s weekly Dino Day creations for nearly a year now on his website. In January, he’ll launch a Kickstarter project to let fans become a part of compiling a year’s worth of Dino Day artwork into a hardcover sketch book available to the public.

Haun has decades of professional contract experience under his belt, with his art featured for big names like DC and Marvel. Most recently he’s drawn such notables as Batwoman and network-television-featured Constantine.  To hear him talk about Dino Day with his kids, this seems like his proudest accomplishment yet!

I love this! My husband does art with my kids every Sunday afternoon. And he’s not even an artist (he’s an engineer).
