I was at the gym when the sales team promoting health shakes had a special display in the lobby. While they touted good reasons for me to try their product, they couldn’t explain to me what was inside, why I shouldn’t be concerned about its artificial sweeteners or whether or not it contained genetically modified ingredients. While I still have a long way to go toward getting fit, I don’t regret passing up that sort of “health food.” I’ve also tried some of those powdery protein mixes that were a lot of work to still taste chalky. So, when Organic Valley asked me to try their protein shakes, it was a refreshingly different experience.
My fitness goals are modest: to be able to keep up with my kids and be in my personal best shape. While I love hiking with my family, running or trying new fitness classes, I tend to be inconsistent. I often feel compelled to clean house with a spare hour instead of heading to the gym. The new Organic Balance protein shakes appeal to me because they offer 190 calories of gluten-free, lactose-free protein drink that could help me get through a busy day, especially if I’ve found time for a run or a workout. They are partially sweetened with organic stevia. And they taste luscious enough to make me feel guilty if I haven’t been putting the miles in.
The Organic Fuel shakes offer more calories along with more protein. Of course both drinks are made from organic dairy from Organic Valley farms, so that in itself gives me some peace of mind. The USDA Organic seal means the product is not made with GMO ingredients. My young daughters both stay involved in some type of athletics, with one getting particularly competitive. I could see bringing along an Organic Fuel for her to have after practice. Maybe you’ve noticed, too that school or league concession stands mostly offer junk food to young athletes and their families. We’re always trying to bring along our own healthier alternatives and Organic Fuel seems like one of them.
The kids and I all tasted the new shakes in their variety of chocolate and vanilla flavors. There’s not a bad flavor in the bunch, they really all taste great! If anything, I was concerned they might taste too sweet, and I’m glad the sugar used in them is unrefined, organic and fairly traded. While our family received free samples of this product, our opinions are our own.
