You trust major stores to provide products you might need from time to time like prescription medicines. You probably trust those same stores to sell a safe version of household products from soaps and lotions to shower curtains and toys. Did you know major retailers meet a higher standard in places like Europe while still selling products in the United States that can legally contain harmful chemicals?
That’s why the Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families coalition has been asking giant drugstore chain Walgreens to Mind the Store!
In this recent post, SCHF says Walgreens has finally acknowledged the concerns brought by 150,000 plus customers. The question is, what will Walgreens do about it? Will moms and dads continue to be on their own to check lists of product ingredients and be completely in the dark about others that are not even listed? HealthyStuff.org recently showed that some products Walgreens sells contain chemicals linked to cancer, asthma and other health problems. This includes hormone disrupting chemicals in sunscreens and even unlabeled lead contamination in dog toys.
You can tell Walgreens about your concerns by calling the store this week at 1-800-925-4733 extension 4. You can sign a letter to the Walgreens CEO here. Social media provides another route to ask Walgreens to Mind the Store. You can also talk politely with your local store manager about how we’re all in this together and it would be helpful if Walgreens at the corporate level would support local stores with better product standards.
Ironically, Walgreens has been merging with a European retailer that already has a better chemical safety policy about what goes into its products. Wouldn’t it be great if Walgreens cared as much about product safety for its US customers?
