EPIC Summer Family Movie Review

Cool theater, green Real 3D glasses for the kids, and an in-your-face experience:  just what our family needed to kick off the start to summer!  We recently experienced our EPIC movie adventure at the Regal Cinemas Pinnacle Stadium 18 in Tennessee’s Turkey Creek center.
The kids stayed fixed on the giant screen the entire time, as you might expect when watching a 3D adventure movie.  “Mom, it’s flying right toward me,” they’d laugh.

EPIC features a teenaged girl named MK who finds herself an unlikely hero in the struggle to preserve the life of the forest.  She encounters the Leaf Men, forest royalty and other fantastic creatures who need her help to survive.  The movie is based on author Williams Joyce’s book The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs, opening the opportunity for another summer reading interest.
Real 3D makes it fun to enter the movie’s computer animated microcosm of the natural world.  EPIC’s themes are classic good versus evil, life versus death and care versus destruction.  The message is clearly explained that just like leaves on a tree, we’re all connected.  Sure, it’s a little sappy and predictable, but the kids loved it.
The save the planet theme is general enough that a faith-based parent like myself can apply a Christian perspective to explain to the kids that stewardship of God’s creation is an awesome responsibility.  We’ve also learned educational tie-ins from Team ENERGY STAR, where free activities teach what even the youngest among us can do to help prevent more climate change.
FULL DISCLOSURE: I am writing about Team ENERGY STAR because I support the program and because I believe it is important to educate the public about energy efficiency and climate change. I have received a modest “thank you” reward, including movie tickets, from LG, an ENERGY STAR partner, in appreciation for my post. That gift in no way influenced my belief that saving energy is important and necessary.
